Blepharoplasty or, eyelid surgery, entails a range of procedures that are available for rejuvenation of the upper and lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty can be performed on both young and old patients. For some, excess skin of the upper lid hangs over the lashes, obstructing vision or causing an aged appearance. For others, the appearance of lower-lid bags may be very distressing. Lower lid bags are a common complaint and their treatment can be either surgical, or non-surgical.

Am I a candidate for a Blepharoplasty?

People with sagging upper lids, or lower lid bags are the best candidates for blepharoplasty consultation. The best candidates will be in overall good health, be non-smokers, and be at a healthy weight. An in-office consultation with Dr. Moores can help to determine if this treatment is right for you.

How is the surgery done?

There are a number of techniques, and blepharoplasty can be some of the most elegant and rewarding surgery we do. Upper-lid surgery can be done in the office-setting, while lower-lid surgery is usually done in the OR. Skin incisions are made that tend to heal very well, and the fat in the lids can be removed, or repositioned as needed.

What is recovery like?

Some bruising around the eyes is expected after surgery, but in some patients bruising may be very light. Expect to look like you had surgery for at least a week, but after a week you should be fine to conceal most residual bruising with some makeup and return to your daily life. Once recovered, blepharoplasty patients are often surprised by how small changes can improve their overall appearance.

Blepharoplasty FAQS

How long do Blepharoplasty results last?

The improvements seen will have a lasting effect on your facial aging. In the case of lower-lid bags the effect can be life-long. For older patients undergoing upper lid blepharoplasty there can be some recurrence of skin excess over a long period of time, but the “facial aging clock” should always be turned back relative to where you would be without blepharoplasty.

 Lower-lid Bags, Filler vs Surgery?

Lower lid bags can be temporarily treated, or concealed with filler. One of the most fascinating topics in plastic surgery is exactly how these bags come to be visible on the face, and often it is the opposite of what we often think. The by filling the area beneath the lower lids their appearance can be significantly improved. This process however, is temporary. A more permanent solution can be achieved with surgery if one elects to pursue operative intervention. The range of procedures available to treat the lower lids varies greatly. The anatomy is complex and the treatments require delicacy and precision. Schedule a consultation to discuss eyelid surgery with Dr. Moores, as we love discussing this topic.
